Vt. trooper accused of stealing from police storage faces new charge

WILLISTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A former Vermont state trooper accused of swiping evidence and reselling it faces a new charge.

Former Vermont trooper Giancarlo DiGenova pleaded not guilty to a number of charges around this time last year, for allegedly stealing things including a Rolex watch, Apple airpods, cellphones and prescription drugs. But now investigators say he stole more than they originally thought.

Vermont State Police say when they were moving into their new Williston barracks, they noticed a gold and diamond necklace was missing from secure storage. That’s where items taken from people who are arrested are held.

Police say the necklace was valued at $375. And they say their investigation found that in December 2022, DiGenova sold the necklace on eBay for $297.

Investigators say he used his state police ID to enter the storage room multiple times leading up to that.

Police say the person who bought the necklace was unaware it was stolen and has since sold it. It has not been recovered.

DiGenova now faces misdemeanor charges for that theft and will be in court later this month.
