Skiers, resorts revel in holiday weekend powder

BOLTON, Vt. (WCAX) – After a winter of sporadic snowfall, local ski resorts are celebrating a fresh dusting of snow that arrived just in time for the important holiday weekend.

What better way to spend Presidents’ Day than skiing a fresh layer of snow under the sun? Visitors flocked to Bolton Valley Monday to spend some quality time on the slopes.

“We got here at like 9 am and it was powder all day, so it’s been amazing,” said Joe Carroll of Richmond.

“The snow hasn’t been very good a lot so we haven’t gone as much as we usually do,” said Violet Mcgrath of Burlington.

But the resort says they got 15 inches of snow over the weekend and into Monday — a rare whiteout after weeks of unpredictable temperatures and little snow. “People are really hungry for it. You know, earlier this month we were a little starved so we’re just really glad people are able to take advantage of this on the holiday,” said the resort’s Michelle Ramirez.

The weekend’s fresh snow and ideal snow-making temperatures salvaged the holiday weekend for ski resorts across the state. While many trails were closed Friday, most resorts opened the majority if not all of their trails Monday.

“It was a little bit cruddy a few weeks ago, there was like some ice, but today it’s perfect, It’s amazing,” said Lily Weissman of Burlington.

“We’re playing hookey from school! It’s pretty powdery, nice. It’s really good to ski in,” said Wren McGrath of Burlington.

“It’s beautiful, It’s so beautiful. You can see all the way to Lake Champlain today,” said Sonja Lunde of Waterbury.

Skiers say they hope for some more powder days before the winter ends.
