Nature awareness at the Intervale

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Plant experts unveil importance and hidden uses of urban greenery at Burlington’s Intervale Center.

Locals gathered Sunday for Spectacular Nature Day, an educational event run in partnership with Burlington and Winooski environmental groups. Visitors planted endangered ostrich ferns by the Winooski River and learned about other local plant species. Others made pesto using a bike-fueled blender or tried treats made from invasive plants, like ice cream made from knotweed foraged off the bike path. Zoe Richards with Burlington Wildways says the day is an important reminder of the nature Vermonters coexist with and impact in urban settings.

“Try to remember the value of having natural spaces in cities. They’re really amazing. They’re really functional. And not many people know about them,” Richards said.

Those looking to forage their own greens or restore nature in their community can check out the Intervale’s programming.
