Wealthy Vermonters call on Legislature to raise their taxes

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Some wealthy Vermonters say they’re willing to pay more to the state to help with pressing issues and they want the Legislature to raise their taxes.

Currently, Vermont lawmakers are considering legislation to enact a 3% surcharge on personal annual income above $500,000 which would raise at least $74 million in state revenue each year.

The group members, who describe themselves as wealthy and high-income Vermonters, signed a letter to lawmakers stating support for the proposal. It was sent during a key moment in the session, as the Legislature faces significant budgetary pressures.

The letter said, in part: “We support the Fair Share for Vermont proposals to increase taxes on the wealthiest Vermont residents, and we are willing to pay additional taxes to raise revenue for fundamental government services. We recognize that through public investment, we can improve the quality of life for all people.”

The letter was signed by 23 people.
