Rutland County Humane Society shelters dogs rescued from South Korea

PITTSFORD, Vt. (WCAX) – The Rutland County Humane Society is giving two dogs rescued from a dog meat farm in South Korea a new lease on life.

After South Korea’s government announced a bill to ban the dog meat industry, the U.S. Humane Society flew in 27 dogs.

Rutland County’s shelter became the first in Vermont to lend a hand. They took in two 10-month-old male dogs named Squid and Chico. Staffers say the pups are both shy as they adjust to their new environment.

“Our staff just worked, you know, very slow and started working with them and over time, they’ve gotten to know them, they’ve gotten to know the routine, when it’s time for breakfast and going out for walks and lunch and all the other things that go on. So, they’re getting more acclimated to life here in the United States,” said Beth Saradarian, the executive director of the Rutland County Humane Society.

Shelter staffers say Squid is a bit of an escape artist.

Both dogs are neutered and are up to date on their vaccines. Staffers have been working to teach the duo basic commands.
