Vermont state officials make plans to mitigate impacts of new Canada tariffs

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Governor Phil Scott says his team will focus on the facts, not the rhetoric, regarding directives from the Trump Administration.

This means looking closely at each policy proposal and parsing out what’s real and the impact it could have on the state.

As a result of President Trump’s recent proposal on tariffs, Gov. Scott has given Vermont’s Secretary of Commerce the task of leading a multi-agency effort to determine the effects they will have on the state.

She says the tariffs have put Vermont in a difficult spot because of how important trade with Canada is for the area.

“This is challenging for us because we value those relationships and this whole conversation potentially erodes those relationships so we’re trying to do this through an objective lens. we rely on those relationships and we want to be good to our neighbors in spite of what’s happening on the national level,” said Vt. Commerce and Community Development Secretary Lindsay Kurrle.

While the tariffs have been paused for 30 days, the team’s work has already started so that the state is ready for any changes.
