MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – A sweeping proposal to reform Vermont public schools could also change who decides what your kids learn in the classroom.
Educational curricula are created at the local level by school boards while standards are made at the state level. But Governor Phil Scott wants the state to be more involved in creating curricula and what Vermont students learn.
Vermont Education Secretary Zoie Saunders says that could lessen the pressure on educators. “The hyper-local decision-making often is burdensome on districts and educators and this would free up their time,” she said.
Saunders says the state will develop an evidence-based review process for school lessons and that there will be opportunities for teachers to have flexibility in the classroom.
