Hungry hawk had hankering for deli food

TOWN OF LOWVILLE, New York (WWNY) – A hawk apparently had a hankering for some cold cuts earlier this month in Lewis County.

According to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the bird wound up in the deli of a grocery store in the town of Lowville on January 7.

The manager told officials the hawk flew into the market through the front entrance’s sliding door and ended up in the deli.

A DEC officer was called in and found the bird perched on a shelf in a storage area.

The hawk was safely captured and released a short distance from the store where it flew off.
