Authorities investigating Legionnaires’ disease at Vt. long-term care facility

WINDSOR, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont health officials are investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in a long-term care facility in Windsor.

The Vermont Department of Health says six cases of the disease are associated with the Village at Cedar Hill, which is part of the Cedar Hill Continuing Care Community. The most recent case may have occurred as recently as January 20 and other cases may be identified. Authorities say they are investigating the facility’s water system.

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria, which can thrive in freshwater environments like water systems, air conditioning systems, and hot water heaters.

The disease, if untreated, can be fatal.
