Man accused of tampering with evidence in NY missing persons case

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – Police say a Plattsburgh man tampered with evidence in connection with an investigation into two missing people in the North Country and the discovery of human remains. Now, court documents also identify one of the missing women.

New York state police said on Monday that two females were reported missing from Plattsburgh on Thursday. On Sunday, their home at 2 Birch Street burned in a suspicious fire. Monday, police said human remains were found near the back of the trailer.

Now, police say Joe Hewitt, 50, of Plattsburgh, took a phone that belonged to Miranda Wade and messaged her family so they wouldn’t be concerned about her welfare. Wade is one of the women who was reported missing.

The home involved in the police investigation is listed online as Hewitt’s.

We expect more details about the case to be released later on Tuesday.
