MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The Federal Building in Montpelier, damaged by flooding in 2023, will not reopen.
Officials with the Montpelier Commission for Recovery and Resilience say they were told by the General Service Administration that the government would dispose of the building by selling or transferring it.
The facility at 87 State Street’s anchor tenant used to be the post office, along with offices for the USGS, IRS, and other federal agencies.
After over a year of waiting, the USPS reopened the post office in a new location in October.
Commission officials say the news is disappointing but also called it an opportunity to find new uses for the building.
