Burlington Police chief to step down next year

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad says he will be stepping down from his post in the new year.

The Mayor’s Office on Tuesday announced that they had received a letter from Murad on November 4 that he would not seek reappointment in June of next year.

“I am grateful for Chief Murad’s years of service to our community. First responders, especially those who are called to lead public safety departments, face increasingly difficult workloads and complex dynamics. As such, I appreciate his willingness to continue leading the Police department over the next several months and supporting a successful leadership transition” BurlingtonMayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak said in a statement.

Since taking the job, Murad has led the police through a Progressive-led effort to defund the department in 2020, record gun violence, and allegations that he strong-armed a UVM Medical Center ER doctor — actions that have not endeared him to some city leaders.

The mayor says the City will engage in a national search process in the coming weeks.
