Plattsburgh City Council considers probing claims of wrongdoing at police dept.

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – Internal documents obtained by WCAX News show what led Plattsburgh’s mayor to call for an investigation into the city’s police department.

Our Alek LaShomb got emails and text messages through a public records request connected to alleged illegal activity by the police department.

In a heavily redacted email from councilor Elizabeth Gibbs to other members of the council, the mayor says Gibbs made claims against the police department, his office and former members of the council.

Mayor Chris Rosenquest wants the investigation that he says would show illegal activity and wrongdoing at the police department.

There are allegations an officer misused a city-owned vehicle and cellphone, doctored time sheets and didn’t follow up on investigations

Rosenquest also wants the City Council to look into potential targeted enforcement of other department members and political candidates by an officer no longer at the Plattsburgh City Police Department.

This all comes as the department has had no stable chief for a few years now and a new mayoral administration takes office in 2025.

Councilors will discuss the potential investigation at their meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Our Alek LaShomb is there.
