Landslide concerns prompt Hartford road repair vote

HARTFORD, Vt. (WCAX) – Voters in Hartford will decide on Election Day whether to make a multimillion-dollar road investment just outside downtown White River Junction.

A section of Fairview Terrace, where it meets Gates Street, has triggered serious concerns about landslides in recent years.

It is currently closed to traffic.

Tuesday, voters will decide whether to approve a $4.1 million bond to pay for needed repairs to reopen the road in one direction heading into downtown White River Junction.

“The question now is how to reopen that road and under what conditions, but more importantly how to stabilize the slope so we don’t have any more landslides that might jeopardize some of the structures in the area,” Hartford Town Manager John Haverstock said.

If approved, the average taxpayer on a $250,000 home would likely see an increase of about $60 for the life of the loan.
