Cooling weather prompts warnings about heating safety

CONCORD, N.H. (WCAX) – As temperatures begin to drop and people fire up their heating systems, the New Hampshire fire marshal urges you to be on high alert for fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Fire officials remind people to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms throughout their houses; to get heating systems inspected every year, especially chimneys; and to keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heaters.

They also warn people not to heat their homes with gas ovens, not to idle cars inside the garage, not to use gas-powered generators in enclosed spaces and to make sure portable heaters have automatic shut-offs.
