Vermont man pleads not guilty to assaulting police officer

FAIR HAVEN, Vt. (WCAX) – A Fair Haven man has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a police officer after a welfare check gone wrong.

Fair Haven police say on Wednesday night they conducted a welfare check for Jeff Hatter, 39, who they found in his garage armed with a hatchet and a knife.

After a struggle with a family member, police say Hatter charged at officers with his weapons.

Police say they used pepper spray and a Taser to take Hatter into custody.

He pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of aggravated assault in court Thursday and was ordered held without bail.
