Failing slope triggers major road construction project in Plainfield

PLAINFIELD, Vt. (WCAX) – Traffic will be rerouted through Plainfield while the state tackles a major road construction project on U.S. Route 2.

Last December, the base of a slope overlooking the Winooski River just west of Plainfield began to give way, and it was made worse by this summer’s floods.

VTrans will spend the next few weeks stabilizing and rebuilding the section of road, rerouting traffic up Route 14 and down Route 214.

Crews say the project will take about two weeks.

“We’re trying to get in here and get out of here as quick as we can,” said Bruce Martin, a VTrans roadway design project manager. “We know having a road closed is an inconvenience to the traveling public, but it’s safety first.”

The construction means some businesses will be starved of foot traffic. Plainfield Hardware and other businesses along Route 2 are reminding people that they are open for business.

“We didn’t have any physical damage here at the hardware store this summer where downtown Plainfield or even our neighbors a quarter of a mile down the hill took some hits. We’ve been lucky that way. Now, it’s our turn,” said David Ertel of Plainfield Hardware.

The project is scheduled to be completed by October.
