Burlington residents invited to sign beam of new BHS building

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Burlington residents are being invited to make their mark on city history, signing the final steel beam of what will become the city’s new high school.

Construction company Whiting-Turner Thursday decked out the beam with the school’s Seahorse mascot and paint. Even though the beam won’t be visible, the hope is that it will serve as a permanent reminder of the community and financial support that went into building the new school.

“It took a while to get to the point where the steel went up, and once the steel started going up, you could really see the building start to take shape. And I’m hearing from people around the community saying, Wow, we can really see the building now,” said Burlington Superintendent Tom Flanagan.

The former BHS campus was abandoned in the fall of 2020 after concerns of PCB contamination. The district scrambled and after spring break was able to move into the defunct Macy’s downtown, where classes will continue until the replacement campus is completed in 2026.

Folks can sign the beam Monday through Friday from 9 to 4 until October 3, when it will be lifted into place.
