BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Republican Governor Phil Scott’s push to soften Democrats’ supermajority at the Statehouse appeared to hit a wall Tuesday as voters in several key races opted for incumbents.
Scott this spring encouraged “moderate” Democrats to step up an run for Tuesday’s primary. But in the Chittenden Central District, longtime TV anchor Stewart Ledbetter, a moderate Democrat, lost to Senators Martine Gulick, Tanya Vyhovsky, and Phil Baruth. Other House incumbents in Brattleboro and Waterbury also survived challenges.
We spoke with Middlebury College political science professor Bert Johnson about what Tuesday’s results mean for the balance of power in Montpelier.
