New York community on the hook for sewer bill from closed prison

MORIAH, N.Y. (WCAX) – An Essex County, New York, community is on the hook to pay for an overdue sewage bill for a former local prison.

Moriah officials say the state’s corrections department has refused to pick up the tab after they had already been paying the $105,000 sewer bill for several years.

Moriah Town Supervisor Matthew Brassard says they will have to cover the payment that was due in April but that it’s not a long-term solution. “New York State paid a good portion of that, that budget, and for them to just out of nowhere, after paying that for two years just to say we are not paying it anymore, it is a tough pill to swallow,” he said.

Lawyers are working to craft a new bill, that the state would pay. Brassard says he’s unsure if the two will work together to pay the remaining costs.
