Champlain Valley Expo announces plans to update facilities

ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. (WCAX) – The chairs at the Champlain Valley Expo were built in the 1960s, and Expo leaders say their chipping and older look keeps artists from wanting to play here. They’re hoping to update these seats, and in turn, update the experience at the venue.

The biggest concert venue in the state, the grandstand at the Champlain Valley Expo, has drawn some big names, from Elton John to Taylor Swift. On Tuesday night, Expo executive director Tim Shea shared the vision for bringing in more of those big-name artists to Essex Junction.

“A lot of the shows we host now outside of the fair. We set it up, take it down, set it up, take it down, the economic model—it really limits the type of acts we can bring here and still keep the ticket prices affordable,” said Shea.

Shea says upgrading the bandstand, parking lots, and rooftops will not only bring more renowned artists to Essex Junction but will also bring money back to the community through tax revenue.

“We need to make sure we’re viable for the next 10, 20 years, so we can continue to be a resource for the community as well as making sure the financial model works for the organization,” said Shea.

Many community members attending the meeting seemed on board and excited about the upgrades.

“Live music is a really strong pillar in a community and really shows vibrance, and I’m really in favor of more live music here,” said Rev Baker of Essex Junction.

“Anytime anybody from out of state comes up here, we have the chance to capture them, to make sure they come back, and this property has the chance to do that, and live music is the best way to do so,” said Ryan Chaffin of Essex.

Others say the additional noise is a cause for concern.

“Even if it’s a band or someone that I like, it’s not like the sound quality is good enough where it’s like ‘Oh well at least I’m listening to some cool band,’ It’s just noise,” said Chris Chiquoine of Essex Junction.

To make the changes, Shea says the Expo needs 15 extra sound waivers from the city to move forward with the project. They have 20 at the moment. They will ask city council members for approval at the next meeting on June 26th.
