SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A $22 million plan to upgrade South Burlington’s wastewater facilities is moving forward with some unique energy-saving features.
It includes upgrading the Bartlett Bay facility with energy-efficient heating. Congresswoman Becca Balint toured the site Tuesday and said she helped to secure $700,000 in federal dollars to replace the treatment facility’s outdated heating system with heat pumps which will extract heat from wastewater to heat the facility and reduce the system’s carbon footprint by 25 percent.
“That’s essentially what government is supposed to be doing. It’s supposed to be doing good work on behalf of the citizenry and this is a great way to show that,” Balint said Tuesday.
The upgrade will take place within the next three years and is part of other major renovations.
