Judge weighs transfer of teen murder case to juvenile court

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – An Addison County judge is weighing whether to move a murder case against a 14-year-old to Juvenile Court.

The shooting happened in October in Bristol. Prosecutors say the teen was in a car with 14-year-old Madden Gouveia and two others when the gun went off, striking Gouveia, who later died of his injuries.

Addison County State’s Attorney Eva Vekos initially said the child would be charged as an adult. But she has since changed course and says she will not object to a request to have the case moved to juvenile court.

The teen charged with the shooting has been living with his family.

WCAX is not identifying the child while the judge makes a final ruling. If and when that ruling comes, the public — including WCAX — will not be able to get updates on the case because proceedings involving minors are kept private.
