BEEKMANTOWN, N.Y. (WCAX) – The owner of a North Country animal shelter where authorities seized dozens of dogs has been formally charged.
Clinton County sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday arrested Hilary Davis, 57, of Peru, New York. She’s charged with animal abuse, failing to provide food and shelter to the dogs, and forging documents related to the animals.
Davis was arraigned in Beekmantown Town Court on Tuesday and released. She is due back in court on Wednesday.
Deputies searched the rescue organization A Canine Gem on Ashley Road in Beekmantown on Feb. 26 and worked with the SPCA to seize 49 dogs from the facility. They said most of the dogs were underfed, some severely.
The dogs were being kept at the Clinton County Jail. The SPCA said last week they would be working with the sheriff’s office to treat the animals and eventually find them new homes or shelters.
