MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The Vermont Statehouse has a new sergeant at arms.
During a joint assembly of the House and Senate Friday, lawmakers elected Agatha Kessler as the new sergeant at arms.
The former deputy director of the Office of Professional Regulation narrowly beat out Mike Ferrant, the director of legislative operations, by a vote of 84 to 82.
The sergeant at arms is in charge of operations and enforcing decorum at the Statehouse, including overseeing the Capitol Police.
Kessler takes over for Janet Miller, who retired this week after nine years on the job.
