Proctor community mourns death of select board chair

PROCTOR, Vt. (WCAX) – The town of Proctor is remembering a teacher and local selectman who died in a car crash last week.

The Rutland County Sherrif’s Department said 46-year-old Ben Curtis died after his car veered off Route 3 Friday afternoon.

Curtis served as the chair of the select board and was also a teacher at Proctor Junior-Senior High School.

Town Manager Judy Frazier joined the select board around the same time as Curtis in 2018 and say’s they will miss him and the leadership he brought to the position. “He was kind of my go-to person on the select board. He was a sounding board for me and he was a man of reason, so if I had questions or doubts or I felt differently about one thing, he would kind of steer me one way or the other,” she said. “I think he has every reason in the world to feel proud of the fact that he actually made an imprint on the town that he grew up in.”

A Mass is being held at St. Peter’s Church on February 27.

Curtis’ position will be filled later in March, after Town Meeting Day.
