MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont health officials say a proposal to increase the potency limits on cannabis is a bad idea.
The Department of Health is advising against a bill at the Statehouse eliminating the THC cap on cannabis flower and concentrates to make more potent products available. Officials say data from the most recent Youth and Behavior Risk Survey showed a connection between higher potency concentrates and issues with the developing minds of adolescents.
“That is something that is being contemplated by the Legislature — is lifting those caps — and the council had serious concerns about that, of the adverse effects that high-potency cannabis products can have,” said Department of Health Deputy Commissioner Kelly Dougherty.
Health officials are telling lawmakers they would like to see more substance-misuse professionals in the state and they’d like to see more mentors for kids with mental illness.
