Police investigating suspicious men approaching children near Burlington schools

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Burlington police continue to investigate several recent reports of suspicious men trying to lure students into cars.

Authorities say three students were approached at a school bus stop Tuesday morning near Edmunds Middle School by a man who offered them money to go with him. The students ran into the school and reported the incident. The suspect was described as a tall, white man with a yellow beard and a scar under his eye.

Police said on Monday, two students from Hunt Middle School were offered a ride downtown by two men in a black compact car. The students again left the area and reported the incident. A similar incident happened earlier this month.

The school district wants students and parents to be vigilant.

“We always have a presence sort of outside of the schools and we have our crossing guards out in the out in the streets. So for right right now, it’s about messaging to our community, just to make sure that they’re aware of their surroundings and keeping their eye out for any suspicious activity that may be happening and letting us know if that happens,” said Tom Flanagan, the superintendent of the Burlington School District.

In September, a student also reported that a man tried to get them into his pickup truck outside the Sustainability Academy.

The district asks anyone with information to give them a call.
