Essex County, NY health officials report uptick in overdoses

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. (WCAX) – Essex County, New York, is seeing a surge in drug overdoses.

County health officials say there was one fatal and 10 non-fatal overdoses in January alone. Officials believe the uptick is in part due to more drugs being laced with fentanyl.

Officials say they are working on prevention strategies including education in schools, community kiosks with Narcan, and testing strips. They are also launching Crediblemind, an app aimed at helping New York residents access mental health support.

The new community kiosk can be found at Essex County’s DMV building in Elizabethtown.
