Winner declared in tight Bennington House race

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The Vermont House of Representatives has certified a razor-thin Bennington election race.

Democrat Jonathan Cooper defeated Republican Bruce Busa by 23 votes in November, but officials discovered voters in Pownal were sent the wrong ballots due to an error on the voter checklist after district lines were redrawn.

Officials considered a revote, but Friday, the House voted 91-42 to accept a report declaring Cooper the winner.

“It’s a process that’s older than any of us and these are rules that have stretched through lifetimes and is kind of special to report back to the family and, one day, hopefully, the grandkids,” said Rep. Jonathan Cooper, D-Pownal.

Cooper said he’s ready to dig into work serving his constituents, serving on the Economic Development Committee.
