Accused killer in Vermont cold case dies while awaiting trial

HYDE PARK, Vt. (WCAX) – A man awaiting trial in a 30-year-old Vermont cold case murder has died.

Carroll Peters died Thursday morning at the age of 71. That’s according to the Lamoille County State’s Attorney.

We don’t yet know how he died, but we are told it’s not suspicious.

Peters was under 24-hour supervision awaiting trial after he was arrested last year for allegedly murdering his estranged wife, Cheryl Peters, 42, of Morrisville, in 1993.

In a statement, Lamoille County State’s Attorney Aliena Gerhard said, in part: “We are disappointed we will not be able to bring this homicide to trial, but we hope that the indictment brought at least some measure of solace to Cheryl Peters’ family. They waited thirty years for justice for the brutal killing of their mother.”

Cheryl Peters was found dead in her Morrisville home in September 1993, shot execution-style. The case went cold for decades.

Then, police took a fresh look at the case last fall and brought prosecutors information to charge Carroll Peters with the murder. Peters pleaded not guilty to the murder and was awaiting trial.
