Stec planning legislation to address security, drugs in NY prisons

MALONE, N.Y. (WCAX) – Changes could be coming to security at a Northern New York prison.

The Upstate Correctional Facility in Malone has been on lockdown after several staff members were sent to the hospital in what union officials call possible drug exposure incidents.

State Sen. Dan Stec toured the facility on Thursday. He says at least two of the medical emergencies happened after staffers interacted with the same inmate.

Now, Stec says plans to craft new legislation to address drugs in prisons.

“I’m in the process of writing a letter to the governor and to Corrections and to my colleagues on this subject of what I learned, and what I think should be done. And my staff will be writing the legislation that will remove the option part of the body scanners. If you are a visitor or a prisoner, you will be subject to the scanner,” said Stec, R-Queensbury.

Stec says lawmakers approved $13 million for body scanners in New York’s 2023 budget.
