Senate panel advances Stefanik’s nomination for UN ambassador

WASHINGTON (WCAX) – North Country Rep. Elise Stefanik is one step closer to being appointed U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Her cabinet nomination on Thursday advanced out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee with bipartisan support.

Experts say Stefanik, a Republican, is likely to be confirmed when the full Senate takes up a vote.

In her confirmation hearing last week, Stefanik pledged to push President Donald Trump’s “America First” stance if confirmed as ambassador and to roll out a review of U.S. funding critical for U.N. operations and its many agencies around the world.
