Vt. child care provider appeals conviction in baby’s death

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – A child care provider serving time behind bars for the death of a baby in her care is asking the state’s high court to rescind her conviction.

Stacey Vaillancourt was sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison in March after a jury convicted her of involuntary manslaughter and child cruelty in the 2019 death of Harper Rose Briar.

Now, Vaillancourt is appealing that conviction, claiming the state’s evidence had significant gaps. She says there was not enough proof to justify her intent and that certain evidence presented to the court was unfair and emotionally charged.

WCAX News reached out to the state for a response but did not hear back before this story was published.
