Vermont lawmakers react to Trump inauguration

WASHINGTON (WCAX) – Vermont’s congressional delegation attended Monday’s presidential inauguration.

Senator Peter Welch congratulated President Trump and Vice President Vance. “My job is to do the best I can to help Vermonters, and I’ll continue to do that,” Welch said in a statement

Congresswoman Becca Balint said it was important to be there to show support for democracy. “It’s time we face the challenges and attacks ahead with courage and clarity. I’m ready for the work ahead to defend our Constitution and will be working tirelessly to address the urgent needs of Vermonters and working people across America,” she said in a statement.

Senator Bernie Sanders posted on X Sunday, “Donald Trump campaigned in 2024 as an anti-establishment populist prepared to take on the political class and act on behalf of working families. When Trump is prepared to move forward in that direction, I will gladly support him. When he does not, I will vigorously oppose him.”

Sanders was silent on social media Monday about the inauguration, instead honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “for his lifelong struggle against bigotry and injustice,” and celebrating his commitment to democracy, workers’ rights, and world peace. “It is enormously important for the future of our country that we never forget Dr. King’s vision,” Sanders added.

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott offered his congratulations to the incoming president. “Today I join Governors across the nation in extending my congratulations to President Trump and Vice President Vance and wish them the very best as they take the reins of a fractured country facing many serious challenges, Scott said in a statement “It’s my hope the new administration and new congress use the peaceful transfer of power as an opportunity to start fresh, work together and collaborate to the benefit of all Americans. I also want extend my appreciation to President Biden and Vice President Harris for their service to our nation.”
