JOHNSON, Vt. (WCAX) – A Johnson nonprofit group on Monday marked the real message behind the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday — service to others.
Jenna’s Promise was one of the organizers of a food drive to support the efforts of the Johnson Community Food Shelf.
Local residents dropped off non-perishable food items and other necessities. The event also featured activities for kids of all ages.
Gregory Tatro, one of the founders of the drug treatment program, says honoring Dr. King’s legacy helps build a stronger community. “We talk about MLK Day being a time of community but it’s also a time of service and giving back, so this is a really important thing. When people come, they’re dropping something off. It can be something as small as a can of soup, but that can of soup will make a difference and the ripple beyond that act will also matter, too,” he said.
Jenna’s Promise works with Vermonters struggling with addiction by connecting them to a variety of resources in the greater Johnson area.
