Vt. Rail System plans expansion to northern NH

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont Rail System is looking to expand its freight services to northern New Hampshire.

The company last spring announced plans to over the New Hampshire Central Railroad, which runs through North Stratford, Colebrook, Groveton, and Whitefield.

VRS officials say they are looking to restore rail service between Whitefield and Gilman, Vermont, as well as exploring the idea of possibly connecting rail lines from St. Johnsbury to Whitefield.

“We believe that that will provide some opportunities for businesses in that area. To transfer from truck to rail. Perhaps grow their business,” said VRS’s Selden Houghton.

Although the company has taken over — the system in New Hampshire, it will still be called New Hampshire Central Railroad.
