Minor earthquake rattles North Country on New Year’s Day

FORT COVINGTON, N.Y. (WCAX) – A minor earthquake shook Northern New York early on New Year’s Day.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake hit just before 1 a.m. on Jan.1 and was centered in Fort Covington near the U.S.-Canada border.

It had a magnitude of 2.4, which is considered minor. The USGS says damage generally doesn’t occur until an earthquake’s magnitude reaches somewhere above 4 or 5.

Multiple people in the area reported feeling the shaking.
