HANOVER, N.H. (WCAX) – History is on display in Hanover and learning more about the town’s past could earn participants a prize.
On any given day, Main Street in Hanover is likely to be hopping with locals and tourists. On this day, the Kratz family is visiting from Baltimore.
“It’s a gorgeous day. We thought we’d come and walk the green with our dog and check out Hanover, see the main street, see what the college is like,” said Katie Kratz.
And there’s even more to do while they are here. Hanover Parks and Recreation Department partnered with the town’s historical society to create the Hanover Holiday History Hunt, a scavenger hunt meets word scramble.
A few residents gathered old holiday photos — earliest dates to 1918 — and posted them around town. Each sign also has a letter. When ordered correctly, the letters identify two well-known local figures. Everyone who guesses the clues correctly wins a prize.
The parks department’s Hannah Falcone says it is aimed at bringing the community together by learning more about its shared history. “To spread that message to the community is really what we set out to do this season. We just thought it would be a cool project and a way to connect with the past a little bit,” she said.
Time will tell if a prize is in the Kratz family’s future. “I did see it and I saw a girl reading it with her mom. And I thought, oh I should show my kids, but they were too hungry,” Kratz said.
The contest, which began last month, was recently extended through the end of January. Names of everyone who successfully completes the scavenger hunt will be put into a grand prize drawing.
