2024 in Review: Vermont sees record weather extremes

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – 2024 will be another year for the record books in Vermont, full of extreme and sometimes wacky weather.

WCAX Meteorologist Peter Kvietkauskas looks at the year in weather.

2024 started how 2023 ended– warm and mild. But just nine days in, rain, snow and heavy wind rocked the region. Many saw gusts of up to 70 mph.

It ended up going down as the warmest meteorological winter on record in Vermont.

Early April saw the snowiest day of the season but four days later, when it counted most, the snow and skies cleared, paving the way for the celestial event of the century. Normally one of the cloudiest parts of the country in April, we saw perfect conditions for the total solar eclipse.

The skies lit back up again in May when a powerful geomagnetic storm brought vibrant northern lights across the state.

Then, the warm embrace of summer’s heat returned, ushering in the first heat wave. And the rain persisted, with some communities picking up more than 10 inches of new rain. That rain, though, did not compare to what July had in store.

Exactly one year to the day after the 2023 flooding, the remnants of what was Hurricane Beryl drowned the Green Mountain State. Then, just 20 days later, another round.

Summer eventually faded into fall and the state dried out, some parts even slipping into drought. Our signature fall foliage came back in full force. It was a treat to have such a warm Halloween.

Though winter weather threatened Thanksgiving travelers, snow lovers reveled just in time for the Killington World Cup.

2024 will go down as one of Vermont’s warmest years on record, and no matter what 2025 brings, the WCAX Weather Team will be here for you.
