MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Just in time for the holidays, Vermont officials are making sure folks get their unclaimed money.
Governor Phil Scott and Treasurer Mike Pieciak on Wednesday announced the return of the Moneyback Program. They say it aims to return nearly $1.3 million to Vermonters before the holidays.
Officials say the program builds on a pilot effort started last year. Tax department data is used to verify the names and addresses of people with unclaimed property. Once verified, the state will mail a letter alerting recipients of what they are owed.
Unclaimed property includes things like uncashed checks and security deposits. Vermonters can also look up unclaimed property online.
The average amount returned to Vermonters who were owed money this year was $241.46.
