Plymouth State wins grant to study seasonal snowpack trends

PLYMOUTH, N.H. (WCAX) – Do you feel like we are seeing less snow than we did before? You might be on to something and a school in our region is looking for answers.

Plymouth State University in New Hampshire got $192,000 in federal cash from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to study seasonal snowpack trends in New England.

Researchers will use the money to study centuries of snowpack data and develop a snow drought index.

It will help groups like the National Weather Service understand winter precipitation changes, and how to protect lives and property, and the ecosystems of the Northeast.

The research comes as water-related disasters, such as recent flooding, have trended upward due to global warming.
