No changes expected in New York school funding formula

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. (WCAX) – New York Gov. Kathy Hochul says there won’t be changes to the state’s education formula next year.

The decision comes after a report from the Rockefeller Institute of Government looking at the Empire State’s education funding.

Hochul previously said she wanted to remove a provision known as “hold harmless” that guarantees state aid, even if a school district had a dip in enrollment.

Boquet Valley Central School District Superintendent Josh Meyer says the decision is a relief for his district.

“Over seven million dollars we get from the state. If we were going to eliminate save harmless, we would lose about two of those seven million dollars. So, it would be a massive loss for us,” Meyer said.

However, he says the report does have potential fixes to education funding, like phasing out “hold harmless” instead of removing it at once.
