Wake sport opponents seek further restrictions in 10 Vermont lakes

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Nine lake associations are asking state environmental officials to ban wake sports on 10 more Vermont lakes.

New rules limiting wake boats and wake sports went into effect this spring that limit their use to only 30 lakes in the state. The rules were established to prevent damage to shoreline ecosystems and disturbance of other non-motorized users.

Advocates petitioned the state to add 10 more lakes to the list, saying the initial restrictions didn’t go far enough.

A meeting on Tuesday in Newport is slated to cover petitions filed by Great and Little Averill Lakes, Echo Lake, Lake Parker, Shadow Lake, and Lake Willoughby. A second meeting on Thursday in Montpelier will cover the Waterbury Reservoir, Lake Fairlee, Caspian Lake, and Joe’s Pond.

The deadline for comments is December 23.
