Homeland Security search in Starksboro connected to gun investigation, court paperwork indicates

STARKSBORO, Vt. (WCAX) – New details on a developing story out of Starksboro, where our cameras spotted an investigation involving U.S. Homeland Security officers.

Part of Route 116 near Shamrock Road was closed Friday morning because of the investigation, but reopened shortly after. While authorities wouldn’t tell us what they were doing there, court paperwork details a federal gun investigation at a home in Starksboro. And it’s connected to a man arrested this week, who police say was involved in a death investigation in Bristol.

Our crew got video of Vermont State Police troopers and Homeland Security at a home, with some going in and out of what looks to be an older-style RV parked in front of it. We don’t know if it’s the same home for sure, but federal investigators say they recovered three guns from a Starksboro home, including an AR-style rifle and a 30-round magazine, which were hidden in a mattress. They say Daryn Barsalou was involved in getting those guns there.

Barsalou was arrested earlier this week on a federal gun charge. Police say he was in the room when his friend, who police have not publicly identified, fatally shot himself in Bristol the week of Thanksgiving. Federal authorities say after that, Barsalou moved multiple guns from the victim’s home and gave them to people who lived in Starksboro. Police also found several guns in search of Barsalou’s home and vehicle, some of which they say were stolen.

Barsalou is behind bars and is expected back in federal court next week.
