Thanksgiving road-trippers prepare for first snow of the season

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Some travelers in our region are shifting their Thanksgiving driving plans ahead of the first widespread measurable snow.

“It looks like it is going to be pretty nasty in the Brattleboro area, ” said Mark Pitcher of Grand Isle. “So, we wanted to get ahead of that.”

Pitcher is driving to Massachusetts for his Thanksgiving with his wife but it’s coming home Friday morning that’s more of a concern.

“Everybody goes their separate ways for the Christmas holiday. For Thanksgiving, we always gather. I have to be back to work at nine o’clock so I will be on the road by four so there won’t be a lot of traffic. But I will just have to be prepared for weather conditions on the road,” he said.

While the snow is nothing new to drivers in our region, experts say it’s good to take it slow, especially at the start of the winter travel season.

“We have been watching it for the past couple of days. So, we heard that this morning it was a little dicey down by 91, so we knew we were going to start a little bit later,” said Lori Kulevich from New York.

The last the region saw snow on Thanksgiving was in 2021 and some are embracing the moment and not letting it impact their schedule. “We planned this probably six or seven months ago so I knew there was snow, but we were planning on it,” said Eric Shin from Indiana.

For those who plan to travel Thursday night, experts suggest ensuring you have a full gas tank, winter tires, and a charged phone.
