Trudeau calls Trump about proposed tariffs

OTTAWA (WCAX) – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is trying to walk a tightrope with President-elect Donald Trump over his threats of a 25-percent tariff on day one of his administration.

Trump threatened on Monday to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China as soon as part of his effort to crack down on illegal immigration and drugs.

Trudeau, who talked with Trump after his call for tariffs, said they had a good conversation about working together. “We talked about the intense and effective connections between our countries that flow back and forth. We talked about some of the challenges that we can work on together. It was a good call,” he said.

New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire are among parts of the country that would feel a significant impact from tariffs. Canada, and Quebec in particular is Vermont’s largest international trading partner with some $5 billion in trade.

Trudeau says he will convene an emergency meeting with provincial leaders on Wednesday.
