State leaders to make statement on UVM Health Network cuts

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – State leaders are gathering in Berlin to protect your access to health care.

WCAX has reported extensively about possible plans from UVM Health Network to slash services.

Earlier this fall, UVM Health Network announced those changes, citing an order from the Green Mountain Care Board to cut commercial prices.

On the chopping block is more than $18 million in cuts to administrative expenses.

In Burlington, officials want to limit overnight patients at UVM Medical Center, limit non-emergency transfers, and end kidney transplant services at UVMMC.

These cuts would also close kidney dialysis at three locations around the state.

At Central Vermont Medical Center, the planned cuts would consolidate family medicine and rehab services as well as close the in-patient psychiatric ward.

All told the planned cuts would eliminate 200 positions.

Amid community uproar over the announcement, legislators from across Vermont will meet at CVMC on Tuesday to announce their position on the cuts.

That press conference starts at noon.

We will continue to follow this story closely and what it means for your access to medical services in Vermont.
