New report offers tips on protecting your family from harmful plastic

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – How can you avoid using excessive and potentially toxic plastic this holiday season?

A new report from the Vermont Public Interest Research and Education Fund– VPIRG’s charitable research and education arm– has some answers.

The report, called “‘Tis the Season for Less Plastic,” warns against buying individually wrapped foods, disposable coffee pods and excessively packaged toys.

It also sounds the alarm on toxins in black plastic utensils, athletic wear and certain bath toys.

Advocates want lawmakers to call for change.

“We can do more and other states are looking at policies that require manufacturers to take more responsibility for the products that they create,” said Paul Burns, the executive director of VPIRG.
