UVM Health Network hopes to handoff dialysis services as part of budget cuts

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The UVM Health Network says they are in talks to transition the operation of dialysis services around the state.

The network last week announced plans to shutter kidney dialysis clinics in Newport, Rutland, and St. Albans as part of a sweeping cost-cutting plan prompted by a budget spat with state regulators.

On Wednesday the network clarified that those clinics will stay open while they look to transition to other hospitals. They say they’re already in talks with North Country Hospital, Northwestern Medical Center, and Rutland Regional Medical Center. They say the process is in the “early stages” and needs regulatory approval. Patients don’t need to do anything just yet.

UVM says the cuts were in response to a 1% decrease in commercial prices ordered by regulators after UVM exceeded its earnings last year.
